Undue Donor Influence on Faculty Hiring

  • Donor Approved Who Got Fellowships - This 3/9/2004 UA proposal to Randy Kendrick says the UA Philosophy Department’s Program in Philosophy of Freedom (predecessor to the Freedom Center) will submit the names of fellowship candidates to Kendrick for approval.

  • UA Agreed to Pay Koch Professors Before Any Others - This letter says the College of Social and Behavioral Sciences will provide permanent state funding for all of Schmidtz’ salary, as well as funding for a new associate professor hired with the Kendrick grant, before recruiting or retaining any faculty in the college starting 1/1/2013.

  • Kendrick Learned from Koch How to Enforce Donor Intent - Says Charles Koch’s intellectual leadership helped her become the person she is, and that she learned about enforcing donor intent at a seminar he sponsored.

  • Gift Agreements Formalize Donor Influence Over Hiring - In these agreements with Koch network donors, UA agreed to show the Charles G. Koch Charitable Foundation, Randy and Earl Kendrick, and the Thomas W. Smith Foundation [TWS] the credentials of candidates for hire as tenured professors in the Freedom Center. The Koch and Kendrick grant conditions say these tenured positions shall exist for at least 25 years.

  • TWS Approves McKenna - The UA administration named this email string “TWS.Approves.McKenna,” apparently to document that they obeyed the requirement in the gift agreement that TWS be shown the credentials of the selected faculty candidate before the candidate was hired with TWS money.

  • Koch Approved Pincione The UA administration named this document “Koch.Approves.Pincione,” apparently to document that they obeyed the requirement in the gift agreement to show Koch the credentials of the candidate selected for hire with Koch money.

  • Freedom Center Director Quashed PEMS Faculty Hiring Decision, Yanked Grant Money & Created New Bogus Search Committee - In a 9/6/18 email to TWS (at 11:31 a.m. in this string), Freedom Center Director David Schmidtz says the Department of Political Economy & Moral Science [PEMS] faculty search committee had “no right and no power to divert the search to some cause other than what TWS wanted to support.” In a 9/6/18 email to TWS (at 9:16 a.m. in this string), Schmidtz said, "The powers that be know we had to relaunch the search in August to have it play out as a normal search." These emails show that the UA Administration agreed to disregard the properly-constituted PEMS faculty search committee's selection, create a new, biased search committee, and bend the rules regarding the deadline for the search in order to recruit and select a candidate that would please TWS.

  • PEMS Told the Faculty Senate that Koch Retracted Grant Money Because Koch Didn't Like a Faculty Candidate Chosen - and Upon Hearing This, the Faculty Senate OKed an MA Program in PPE! - See agenda item 6 on page 5. The entity that retracted grant money was TWS, not the Koch Foundation as alleged by the head of PEMS in these minutes. But it is shocking that the Faculty Senate approved PEMS' desire to create a PPE Masters Degree because the Senate thought that Koch had retracted its grant. Instead, the Senators should have objected to Koch trying to influence hiring by withdrawing money for a new tenured faculty member.
